In the United States, Texas is considered among the top places in the country where pedestrians are more likely to be struck and killed by a motor vehicle. In fact, the state ranked 13th with the highest rate of pedestrian fatality in the country with a rate of 0.93 per 100,000 people.
In an attempt to curb the number of pedestrian-involved car accidents, the Texas Department of Transportation launched a campaign to improve pedestrian safety especially along and around the Austin area. The said campaign provides reflective bags to the homeless population and school children who were at risk of getting involved in a collision with an automobile.
